Description

What would you do if a Jehovah’s Witness challenged you to prove the Trinity from the Bible? Could you explain why you believe Jesus is Almighty God and not a created being?

That was the challenge I faced in 1996 when a Jehovah’s Witness named Steve offered to study the Trinity with my dad and me. Little did I know that this encounter would launch me into years of biblical research and eventually lead to the writing of my book, Yes, You Should Believe in the Trinity!

Today, I want to share how that experience changed the direction of my life and why I’ve made my research available to help other Christians confidently share their faith with Jehovah’s Witnesses.

It All Started with a Conversation About the Trinity

Shortly after I began studying Christian apologetics, a friend named Steve was installing carpet in our home. I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to ask him about his faith. When I asked Steve whether he hoped to go to heaven when he died, he told me that he was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and hoped to live forever on a paradise earth. Curious about his beliefs, I asked him what he thought was the biggest difference between Jehovah’s Witnesses and other Christians. His answer was simple: “The Trinity.”

When I asked why he didn’t believe in the Trinity, Steve offered to meet with my dad and me to study the Watchtower Society’s brochure, Should You Believe in the Trinity? We accepted his invitation, and our meetings began the following week.

What We Discovered About the Watchtower’s Arguments

As we examined the brochure, I was surprised by the many quotations from Christian scholars, historians, and religious encyclopedias that seemed to support the Watchtower’s claim that the Trinity was not a biblical teaching. The brochure argued that the Trinity was not taught by the earliest Christians, that it had been influenced by pagan religions, and that the Bible did not support the belief that Jesus is Almighty God. I wondered, Could all these scholars really agree with the Watchtower’s position? Determined to investigate, my dad and I visited university libraries to locate the original books and documents quoted in the brochure. What we discovered was astonishing!

As we examined these sources in their original context, we found numerous examples where the Watchtower had misrepresented the authors’ statements. Some quotations were taken out of context, while others omitted important information that would have changed how readers understood the authors’ conclusions. Rather than simply asking people to take my word for it, I began photocopying the original documentation so others could examine the evidence themselves. But my research didn’t stop with the historical claims. I also wanted to answer the most important question:

What does the Bible itself teach about the identity of Jesus Christ, the Father, and the Holy Spirit?

The Biblical Evidence for the Trinity

As I continued studying, I discovered that many of the Scriptures Jehovah’s Witnesses use to argue against the Trinity can be understood differently when examined in their biblical context.

For example:

  • If Jesus is a created being, why does the Bible say that all things came into existence through Him? (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17)
  • If Jehovah alone is the Creator, why does Scripture identify Jesus as the Creator of heaven and earth? (Isaiah 44:24; Hebrews 1:10-12)
  • If Jesus is not truly God, why did Thomas address Him as “My Lord and my God”? (John 20:28)
  • If the Holy Spirit is merely an impersonal force, why does He speak, teach, guide, and make decisions? (Acts 13:2; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 12:11)
  • If Jesus is not worthy of the same honor as the Father, why did Jesus say that all must honor the Son just as they honor the Father? (John 5:23)

These are just a few of the biblical questions I address in my book.

Why I Wrote Yes, You Should Believe in the Trinity!

My research eventually became a book titled Yes, You Should Believe in the Trinity! — A Page-by-Page Response to the Watchtower Society’s Brochure: Should You Believe in the Trinity? The expanded second edition includes extensive biblical research, historical analysis, and photocopied documentation of the original sources cited by the Watchtower Society.

In the book, I examine the Watchtower’s arguments against the Trinity and explain why I believe the Scriptures clearly identify Jesus Christ as Almighty God and the Holy Spirit as a divine Person. I also address common objections, including whether Jesus is the archangel Michael, why Jesus called the Father His God, why Jesus said the Father was greater than He, and whether Christians should pray directly to Jesus. My goal is not simply to win a theological argument. I want Jehovah’s Witnesses to discover who Jesus really is and come into a personal relationship with Him.

After all, Jesus said: “Unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

Understanding the identity of Jesus Christ is not merely an academic exercise. It has eternal significance.

You Can Help Jehovah’s Witnesses Discover the Truth About Jesus

Looking back, I’m grateful that Steve challenged me to examine what I believed. His questions motivated me to dig deeper into Scripture, investigate the Watchtower’s claims, and develop resources that could help others share their faith.

What began as a conversation in my home eventually became part of a much larger ministry dedicated to reaching Jehovah’s Witnesses with the biblical gospel.

Perhaps God will use a similar conversation in your life.

The next time a Jehovah’s Witness tells you that the Trinity is not in the Bible, don’t be intimidated. Instead, invite them to examine the Scriptures with you.
